## Persistence in the Face of Despair “Percy”
Note on names:
Many who survived [[The Hard Winter]] aboard the ferry chose names for themselves that remind them of something positive or notable. It has developed into a tradition among many of the [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]] to adopt names like this.

**Role in the community**: Percy was a captive during the encounter on the ferry when she was 9 years old during The Quiet Year. Surviving the Illness, she underwent changes to her body that included, among other things, the growth of porcupine-like quills in her hair. Though her appearance intimidates new members of the community, she quickly breaks down hesitation. She’s a leader within the [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]], and an advocate for sending Striders out into the world to find others like her.
She finds personal satisfaction in helping others find strength and healing through their connection to the spiritual world, and she is deeply connected to the Ferry, which she considers to be a sacred place. She works closely with the other [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]] to maintain and protect it.
**Family**: Like many [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]], Percy has found a family of other spiritual members of the community. Though she has no biological family, she is deeply connected to the other [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]] and would describe them as family. (And to a lesser degree, she considers every member of the community her family.)
