Many who survived [[The Hard Winter]] aboard the ferry chose names for themselves that remind them of something positive or notable. It has developed into a tradition among many of the [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]] to adopt names like this.

**Role in the community**: Forest is a member of the [[28 Years Later#The Regainers Guild|Regainers Guild]] who is fascinated by the idea of non-human, mechanical intelligences -- especially those who were capable of motion on their own. He believes such a person would be a perfect Strider, needing no food or water, and being incapable of contracting disease. While he waits for news of one from Striders, he works repairing and inventing small machines and has a particular aptitude with motors and kinetic devices. He carries adaptions similar to those of a pine marten or stoat, and his fine, insulating fur keeps him plenty warm in most weather, though he wears light clothing out of courtesy.
