Many who survived [[The Hard Winter]] aboard the ferry chose names for themselves that remind them of something positive or notable. It has developed into a tradition among many of the [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singers]] to adopt names like this.

**Role in the community**: Whispers is a [[28 Years Later#The Water Singers|Water Singer]] who has been touched by the illness and has developed adaptions including feathers in addition to her hair and talons on their fingertips. She is deeply connected to the spiritual world and is able to sense and understand the emotions and thoughts of others. It’s unclear whether this is supernatural or strongly empathetic. In either case, they use their abilities to help others, especially those who have been touched by the illness, to understand and embrace themselves. They are also a skilled herbalist and tea maker, and are often seen visiting homes throughout the community offering tea service and a listening ear or connecting with members of [[28 Years Later#The Conservators]] or [[28 Years Later#The Oasis Institute]] to see if there are any promising leads on new brewable herbs or fruits.
**Family**: Whispers has a younger brother, Emile, who survived the Quiet Year, but never made it to the community from the ferry. She thinks of her brother often, and firmly believes he is still out in the Still World somewhere. When pressed, she cannot articulate why, but her certainty is unfailing.
